Berrylands is one big interwar estate, and it cleans like one

The station opened on 16 October 1933, paid for almost entirely by the developers who were selling the houses around it, and the platforms are still timber. The Berrylands Estate had been advertised two years earlier with semi-detached houses at £850 to £885. Almost everything within walking distance of Chiltern Drive, Alexandra Drive, Berrylands Road and King Charles Road comes from that one burst of building, which makes quoting unusually predictable: bay-fronted three bed semi, side return, original stairs, one flight of carpet.

What that means in practice is a three bedroom move-out clean at £339 with a fairly consistent shape to it. Bay window sashes that collect grit in the runners. A kitchen extended into the side return at some point since the seventies. Airing cupboard with a lagged tank. Original picture rails that hold dust nobody has looked at. And front gardens converted to hardstanding on most of the road, which is the single best thing about working here, because the van goes on the drive and the hoses reach.

The Hogsmill sewage treatment works on the edge of the district is the other thing people mention. Thames Water built it in the 1950s, refurbished it in the mid-1990s when load came across from the closed Worcester Park works, and covered most of the filter beds, with odour domes added around 2011. The old “Smellylands” joke is largely historical now, though a warm still evening after heavy rain can still remind you it is there. It has no bearing on a clean, and we mention it only because everyone asks.
