Living beside the A3 changes what a clean has to remove

Tolworth grew up around the bypass, and traffic film is the local speciality. Properties fronting the Broadway, Ewell Road and anything with a window looking at the A3 pick up a grey, oily deposit on glass, frames and sills that ordinary glass cleaner smears rather than removes. It needs degreasing first and polishing second. Inventory clerks photograph windows in daylight, so this is the difference between a clean flat and a flat that looks dirty in the photographs.

Above it all sits Tolworth Tower, twenty two storeys by Richard Seifert and Partners, finished in 1964 and empty of office tenants since March 2019. Consent has been granted to turn it into flats, with a wider scheme around it, so the mix of housing here is about to change again. For now the stock is mostly 1930s semis laid out along the Broadway and the roads off it, with newer flats over the shops and around the station on the Chessington branch line.

Practically, that means bay windows with sash or early casement frames, hallways with the original tiled paths outside, and kitchens extended into the side return at some point in the last thirty years. Parking is easier than in Surbiton or Kingston, and a good number of these houses have a dropped kerb and a hardstanding, which speeds the day up. Tell us if the driveway is free and we will use it.

One more Tolworth habit worth knowing. The rented flats above the Broadway shops tend to have galley kitchens with a recirculating hood, and the grease that the filter stops catching ends up on the ceiling above the hob. That gets degreased properly, and it is included in the move-out price.

Tolworth questions

Do you clean outside windows?

Ground floor only, and only where we can reach safely from the ground. Anything above that wants a window cleaner with a pole system, and we will happily say so.

How long does a three bed semi take?

Six to eight hours with two or three cleaners, longer if the oven has not been touched in a couple of years. We give you a time on the phone and stick to it.

Which areas nearby do you cover?

Surbiton and Hook are both a few minutes away, and every service and figure is on the price list.
